Are You Positive You’re Feeling a Little Negative Lately?

Oct 1, 2024 | Newsletter

If you’re like me, these days, turning on the news is not something to look forward to very often. Media coverage of negative news can be stressful and make you feel helpless. I’m not saying we should ignore what’s going on around us. Still, we must manage our mental health to remain happyand positive individuals. I’ve been trying to practice some ways to improve my outlook, feel more positive, and reduce my stress overall. I doubt any of these will be a revelation to you, let’s consider them more like reminders. I hope you find them helpful.

Tip #1: Be Mindful. Mindfulness encourages you to focus on the present moment and helps you break the cycle of overthinking.

Tip #2: Limit News & Social Media. This tip alone can improve your sense of well-being. Set your own boundaries on how much time you devote to the news and your social media feeds. Curate your feeds to focus on positive, educational, or uplifting content.

Tip #3: Be Grateful. I have seen where it is suggested to have a gratitude journal or jar where you write down at least one thing for which you are grateful… your spouse, your children, your job, etc., daily. If that just isn’t “you,” just try thinking of at least one thing every day. Or, express gratitude to someone you encounter each day. It all adds up to a more positive mindset.

Tip #4:  Get Physical. Being active and exercising is a natural stress reliever, releasing endorphins and all that. You know how to take it from here … just a reminder if you’ve “fallen off the exercise wagon” lately. (Our parents were on to something when they told us to go outside and play!)

Tip #5:  Get a Good Night’s Rest. A recent Gallup poll showed that women, particularly those under age 50, report sleeping less than they need and have higher stress levels than men. I am not surprised—are you? You probably know what the experts say to do, such as creating a calming nighttime routine and limiting screen time before bed (See Tip #2). Power naps can help if you’re in a situation where they’re possible.

Tip #6: Stay Connected. Make time to talk with family, friends, and loved ones. If you are becoming more isolated, explore support groups, and do not hesitate to seek professional help if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

You probably already know all 6 tips, but it never hurts as we enter the colder “inside” months to be reminded to take care of our mental health all 12 months of the year. I’m not saying I engage in all of these ideas, but I know my family appreciates my efforts to have a positive attitude … I am sure yours will as well. Plus, you’ll just be happier and don’t we all want that?

Positively best regards,

David
