This post is about what makes the “best estate planning attorney in Cincinnati, OH.” That’s an interesting question, and my guess is, ask 100 people, and you’ll get a mixed bag of what they consider to be “best” when it comes to estate planning attorneys here in Cincinnati, OH.
I’ve talked a bit about this, most recently in January, but without being too redundant, I think it comes down to 3 key factors.
Experience: As with any service provider, years of practice are usually thought to add to the individual’s knowledge base and overall expertise. The same goes for attorneys. But, again, like any service, there are generalists and specialists such as the medical field, auto repair, realtors, and contractors. Sometimes a general practitioner will do just fine. But you might choose the specialist when it’s a unique situation or truly close to your heart (your vintage auto or your family, for example). Many attorneys can help you with a will, trust, or probate, but it “feels better” to trust your hard-earned assets and loved ones to an estate planning attorney who concentrates their practice in just that – estate planning. Often it isn’t even a matter of cost difference, so if it’s ‘best” you’re seeking, working with an estate planning attorney who concentrates in that practice area is your best option.
Personality: Not sure how many would agree with me on this factor, but I feel it is important when determining who the best estate planning attorney might be for you. The client-attorney relationship is based on trust. You want to feel good about your choice and know that all of your dealings with that attorney will be held in confidence. And it is easier to have trust in your estate planning attorney when you like them and when you feel comfortable with them. No, you’re not looking for a new best friend, but it is helpful to know they “get you.” Therefore, an estate planning attorney should be approachable and likable.
Motivation: Last but not least is motivation. Here’s an example of what I mean. You are choosing between two estate planning attorneys. One is very focused on building their practice with as many clients as possible. The driver behind it is revenue. The other estate planning attorney genuinely wants to help clients protect their hard-earned assets and loved ones. Yes, it’s a good way to make a living, but the primary motivator is doing a good job for every client. We’ve probably all said, at one time or another, about someone, “They’re only in it for the money.” And maybe that would be ok for some, but I know I would personally rather work with an estate planning attorney who is driven to deliver their best and not let the money be a priority.
This is my opinion, based on how I conduct myself and deliver estate planning services to my clients. First, I concentrate on estate planning, knowing it makes me a better estate planning attorney. And I like to get to know clients so I can better ensure they have the right estate plan for them and their families. And last, I am honored when someone chooses to work with me – I never think of them as “just another client.” I assume, like I do, that each client’s family is the most important thing in the world to them and I receive enormous satisfaction from knowing I’ve helped clients protect their assets and loved ones. It is a privilege to do so.
