Choosing to Be Happy
We all know these are turbulent times—politically, economically, globally, and more. If we’re not careful, we can let them get us down. So, it is times like these when I have to remind myself that I have the power to choose to be happy or not. Without sounding too much like a “Pollyanna,” I know there are things I can do to help me be happy. The following are six tips experts say can help support your choice to be happy, too.
First, the professionals say being happy is actually a mix of mindset, habits, and lifestyle choices. Consider how you might incorporate some of these into your life in your pursuit of happiness.
- Being grateful: Appreciating what you have, focusing on the positives, and acknowledging the small joys in your life.
- Having meaning and purpose: Getting involved in activities that align with your values and give your life direction, such as work, hobbies or helping others.
- Building and maintaining positive relationships: With friends, family, and community provide a sense of belonging and support.
- Physical and mental well-being: Get enough rest, exercise, and nutrition—they all help manage everyday stress.
- Personal growth: Continuous learning, improving, and challenging yourself will help you grow and feel fulfilled.
- Live in the moment: Enjoy the present rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. (And I would be remiss if, as an estate planning attorney, I didn’t include here that updating your estate plan is an excellent way to experience peace of mind when protecting your loved ones now and for the future.)
We all want to be happy, don’t we? Despite what’s going on in the world right now, I can make that choice and use the above tips to be successful. I hope they help you, too.
I hope you all have a wonderful and happy spring!
Sincerely,
David
