I ran across some information recently that provided some fun facts about the legal profession. I know, you don’t usually find the words “fun” and “legal profession” in the same sentence but I think you might find these at least interesting.

  1. In what country will you find the highest-paid lawyers?
(Japan – where did you think it would be?)
  2. When did the law profession finally include a woman attorney?
(1869. Arabella Mansfield passed the Iowa Bar in 1869. Since the profession was closed to women – she had to sue the state in order to sit in the exams.Go Arabella!)
  3. Which state has the most lawyers per capita?
(Washington D.C.– I know – trick question since D.C. is not a state – at last count, there were 788.1 lawyers per 10,000 residents. Compare that to 22.2 lawyers for every 10,000 residents in South Dakota. I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions as to the “why” of these numbers.)
  4. Which of the following famous individuals were ALSO lawyers at some point in their life?
    John Cleese (actor/comedian)
Geraldo Rivera (TV show host, journalist, vault-opener)
    Ben Stein (comedian)
    Jerry Springer (talk-show host)
    Tchaikovsky (composer)
    Andrea Bocelli (singer)
    John Grisham (author)

(Another trick question – ALL OF THEM practiced law at one point before moving on to become famous. )

Having just wrapped up my one-year term as President of the Ohio State Bar Association I can tell you that the state of Ohio is fortunate to have so many exceptionally qualified attorneys, men and women, who stand ready to serve the good people of Ohio. And I didn’t meet a single one trying to get their big break in Hollywood!

Our state ranks somewhere between Washington D.C. and South Dakota in terms of numbers of attorneys but I can assure you, whatever your legal needs, there will be a qualified attorney in Ohio to help you.
