For many people, maybe you too, October is welcomed with open arms and great anticipation of things to come. Enjoying fun activities such as taking your young children or grandchildren to choose the perfect pumpkin. Or handing out treats on Halloween to all the little ghosts and goblins. For empty-nesters, a day hike or country drive checking out the gorgeous fall foliage might be the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon for you. For homeowners, it also signals the end of most outdoor chores, giving us more leisure time. I’ve come to view October as more than fall colors and pumpkins. For me, it is at this time of year that I naturally want to pull my family close to me in a “virtual hug of protection” as we gather in front of the fireplace on a chilly night. I think it is a natural instinct as the days grow shorter and the nights longer to think about the safety and security of our loved ones. I also believe it is the ideal time to consider updating your estate plan. The garden chores are behind you, and the year-end holiday frenzy hasn’t yet arrived. It is the perfect time to make sure your “virtual hug of protection” around your loved ones is, in fact, legally binding. I say that somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but none of us know what the future, even tomorrow, holds. Why not use this perfect time of year to make whatever changes your estate plan needs? Maybe that means updating your beneficiaries, adjusting your living will, or adding a beloved pet to your plan. Whatever changes you might need, please let’s take this opportunity before life gets crazy again to make them together.
Stay safe everyone!
Best regards,
David
