Every year I look forward to March because, for the most part, it’s a month filled with fun, and the promise of spring is right around the corner. As a basketball fan, I love March Madness. And even if we have cold and dreary days, I know spring is coming, and I start thinking about possible landscape updates around my home. Those of an Irish persuasion, authentically or adopted for St. Patrick’s Day, enjoy the related celebrations and, of course, the green beer. But to be honest, the estate planning attorney in me always kicks in, and my mind goes to all things tax-related – gathering documents, researching potential deductions, etc. The middle of April isn’t far away. I also like to remind my friends, colleagues, and clients to ask themselves while they’re going through their 2022 financials, did anything happen that would warrant an update of your estate plan? Significant events such as divorce, inheritance, property acquisition, and even the relocation of the executor of your will are just a few examples. A lot can change in a year. And if you’ve not updated your plan in a long time, why not review it quickly? You might find more out-of-date than you realize. It is essential to keep your estate plan in step with your life as it is now, not ten years ago.
I hope March proves to be a great month for you, and in a nod to St Patrick’s Day, here’s a recipe from the Food Network for one of my favorites, Irish coffee.
Luck of the Irish to you!
1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee
1 TBL brown sugar
1 Jigger Irish whiskey
Heavy cream slightly whipped
Fill footed mug or a mug with hot water to preheat it, then empty. Pour piping hot coffee into warmed glass until it is about 3/4 full. Add the brown sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Blend in Irish whiskey. Top with a collar of the whipped heavy cream by pouring gently over back of spoon. Serve hot
