In my experience, I have discovered that while most people know to reach out for legal representation in obvious situations (criminal charges, for example), the lines can get blurry between hiring an attorney or going solo in others.
You all know I provide estate planning services. Still, I want to remind you that my esteemed and experienced partners and colleagues here at Barron Peck Bennie & Schlemmer, offer a broad range of legal services to our clients, including Business Transactions, Real Estate, Employment Matters, Divorce, Custody, Personal Injury, Social Security Disability, Worker’s Compensation, and Commercial Litigation.
So, when should you contact an attorney for help? The following guidelines may be helpful.
Hire Or Consult an Attorney When There Is Significant Money, Property, or Legal Risk Involved, Such As:
- Estate planning
- Starting or dissolving a business
- Divorce, custody, or adoption
- Personal injury or wrongful death
- Worker’s compensation and Social Security Disability
- Buying or selling real estate
Some Situations Call for Legal Guidance, Such As:
- You’re being asked to sign a contract, agreement, or settlement you don’t fully understand.
- You are uncomfortable because the other parties have hired attorneys or there is a dispute where (inheritance, employment, etc.) the outcome may (or will) impact you, your family, your money, your security, etc.
On The Other Hand, There Are Situations Where It Is Not Likely You Need an Attorney.
Low risk, straightforward situations such as:
- Small claims court cases (under a few thousand dollars)
- Basic uncontested divorce with no property or kids
- Routine beneficiary forms, car title transfer, or minor contract (like a rental agreement)
You are using trusted and verified forms or services, or it is purely informational, such as:
- Government websites
- Renewing a passport
- Filing a DBA
- Updating a beneficiary designation
BOTTOM LINE: If the decision affects your money, rights, or relationships long-term, at least consult with an attorney. And, if you are not sure, play it safe and give me a call so I can help direct you.
If you, a friend, a family member, or a colleague could benefit from any kind of legal guidance, please do not hesitate to contact me. I’ll put you in touch with one of my trusted and knowledgeable colleagues here at Barron Peck Bennie & Schlemmer. I know you will be in good hands and will receive the best legal advice.
Best regards,
David Lefton
